Italy, a land steeped in history from ancient times to the present with remarkable natural scenery and a rich cultural heritage, is on display with music, dance, and video at the next HCCO concert! Bask in the beauty of Mascagni’s Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana or the tempestuous dancing of the Tarentella performed by Dance Connections, Inc. and the glow of grand Italian song by Columbia’s very own mezzo soprano Denée Barr. As the mellifluous strains of Vivaldi, Rossini, Puccini, and Verdi greet your ears, enjoy views of iconic Italian scenery and art from Rome , Florence, and Venice to the Amalfi Coast, Lake Cuomo, Sicily and more. Jonathan Palevsky, program director of WBJC-FM will help us navigate through the fascinating history and culture of this land telling us the stories behind the music. We’ll also be treated to a performance by one of Howard County’s rising stars of the violin, Lauren Yoon, playing Paganini’s devilishly difficult “La Campanella”. Art, too, will be on display, presented by Mat About You Gallery featuring the work of eminent Italian-American artist Gino Manelli and others. Proceeds from the sale of these works will help benefit the orchestra.
Finally, there will be a post concert reception featuring classic Italian desserts. It’s a great way to usher in the New Year honoring a great country with grand traditions and incomparable beauty- hope to see you there:
