The Howard County Arts Council

The Howard County Arts Council
The Howard County Arts Council is authorized by Howard County Government and the Maryland State Arts Council to administer public funds designated for the arts. As the official grant-giving agency for the arts in the county, we administer several grant programs and award more than $300,000 annually to local arts organizations, PTAs, key regional arts and cultural institutions, college-bound high school seniors, and others. Through these grant programs, the Arts Council helps ensure stability and growth in the arts community.

Bringing the Arts to Life

The Howard County Arts Council was established to serve the citizens of Howard County by fostering the arts. We are devoted to nurturing local artists and arts organizations, furthering the public’s appreciation of the arts, and ensuring that the arts are accessible – regardless of age, ability or economic status.

To fulfill our mission and goals, the Arts Council sponsors a wide variety of arts initiatives that nurture and strengthen the arts. We award grants and scholarships, provide advancement opportunities for artists and arts organizations, create an environment for open expression and exchange, encourage people – young and old alike – to discover their own artistic talents, and act as the primary voice and advocate for the Howard County arts community.

In addition, the Arts Council oversees the operations of the Howard County Center for the Arts, a multipurpose arts facility in Ellicott City, where visitors can take a class, view an exhibit, or enjoy a performance. In bringing the arts to life in our community, we hope to encourage people with diverse interests and backgrounds to explore and enjoy the arts!

The Howard County Arts Council is committed to non-discrimination in its programs and operations.  HCAC welcomes participation of patrons with disabilities and prides itself on maintaining a facility that is accessible to all.  In the theatre, patrons will find wheelchair and companion seating.  Other reasonable ADA accommodations that patrons need to enjoy HCAC programs should be requested at the time of registration or at least 2 weeks in advance.  Call 410.313.ARTS (2787), MD Relay 711, or email us at
